Sur la porte du Palais des Doges, le lion de Saint Marc représente l’évangéliste sous la figure du lion ailé du tétramorphe. La Bible entre ses pattes représente un état de paix. Il est le symbole de la Sérénissime République de Venise. Selon la légende, Saint Marc voyageant en Europe, serait arrivé dans la lagune où un ange lui aurait dit « Que la paix soit avec toi, Marc, mon évangéliste. Ici ton corps vient reposer. » Il n’en fallait pas davantage pour aller voler ses reliques prêt d’Alexandrie en 828.

Over the entrance door of the Doge’s Palace, the lion of Saint Mark represents the Evangelist, pictured in the form of a winged lion of the Tetramorph. The Bible between its paws represent a state of peace.It is the symbol of the Most Serene Republic of Venice. According to the legend, Saint Mark travelling through Europe arrived at the lagoon when an angel told him : « Peace be with thee, O Mark, my evangelist. Here thy body will rest ». What a good excuse to go and steal the saint’s relics in 828 near Alexandria.
